Computer Viruses and Cyberattacks
Practically everything we do nowadays depends on computers in one way or another. We pay for our shopping, plan our days, stay in touch with our loved ones, and even drive our cars using computers.
Modern AI systems can analyze and write software. They can identify vulnerabilities in software and could be used to exploit them. As AI capabilities advance, so too will the capabilities of the exploits they can create.
Extremely powerful computer viruses have always been very difficult to develop, but AI could change that. Instead of having to hire a team of skilled security experts or hackers to discover zero-day exploits, someone could use a much cheaper AI system to do the job. Of course, AI could also help with cyber defense, and it remains unclear which side will gain the advantage.
Why Is a Pause Necessary?
Artificial intelligence is advancing at an unprecedented pace. The most powerful systems are being built by a small number of companies and countries, and the race for technological supremacy can put pressure to prioritize development over safety.
