Loss of Human Control

Loss of Human Control

Even if we succeed in creating only AI systems that we can individually control, we could gradually lose our ability to make important decisions as each such system becomes integrated into institutions or everyday life. These processes would increasingly be shaped by AI systems rather than humans, and if we cannot coordinate quickly enough or lack essential knowledge about how these systems work, we could eventually lose all control over our own future.

This could lead to a civilization in which each system optimizes for different objectives, with no clear overall direction and no way to change course. The technical knowledge required to modify these systems might be missing from the outset or could be lost over time as we become increasingly dependent on technology and that technology grows ever more complex.

Systems may achieve their goals, but those goals might not fully reflect the values they were intended to represent. To some extent, this problem is already evident today, but AI systems could amplify it considerably.

Why Is a Pause Necessary?

Artificial intelligence is advancing at an unprecedented pace. The most powerful systems are being built by a small number of companies and countries, and the race for technological supremacy can put pressure to prioritize development over safety.
