Mental Health and Addiction

The increasing use of artificial intelligence can have both positive and negative effects on mental health. AI systems can be used for information, activity planning, educational support, or even as conversational tools for people who feel lonely. However, excessive use and the development of a dependent relationship with these systems can create problems, particularly when AI begins to replace real human interactions.

One of the main risks is dependence on conversations with AI. Users may end up spending a great deal of time talking to a chatbot because it is always available, responds quickly, and may be perceived as patient and nonjudgmental. For some individuals, interacting with AI can gradually become an alternative to real social relationships, potentially contributing to social isolation.

Another concern is emotional attachment to AI systems. Modern models can use highly natural language and respond in an empathetic manner, creating the impression of an authentic relationship. Users may begin to consider a chatbot a friend, confidant, or conversation partner. Unlike a human relationship, however, an AI system does not have feelings or genuinely experience empathy, even if it can convincingly simulate this type of behavior.

AI can also influence how people make personal decisions. If someone begins to constantly seek advice from an AI system about relationships, family, career, or personal problems, they may become dependent on validation provided by technology. Instead of consulting trusted people or professionals when dealing with important matters, users may come to regard AI responses as their primary source of guidance.

A particularly serious risk arises when AI is used in connection with significant mental health issues. A chatbot cannot replace a psychologist, psychiatrist, or other qualified professional. If the system provides an inappropriate response or the user misinterprets the information received, the consequences can be serious. Therefore, in severe situations, the technology should be considered an auxiliary tool at most, not a substitute for professional help.

There is also the problem of excessive technology use in general. Like social media, video games, and other digital platforms, AI applications can encourage users to spend very long periods in front of a screen. This can affect sleep, physical activity, concentration, and the time spent with family or friends.

Therefore, artificial intelligence can be a useful tool for communication, education, and productivity, but it is important to maintain a balanced approach to its use. AI should complement human relationships and activities rather than replace them, and users should be aware that a system that simulates empathy and emotional closeness is not equivalent to a real person.

Why Is a Pause Necessary?

Artificial intelligence is advancing at an unprecedented pace. The most powerful systems are being built by a small number of companies and countries, and the race for technological supremacy can put pressure to prioritize development over safety.
